At the end of 2008 we launched Keep Kakok Clean project with a group of local volunteers. We are providing them with utensils to collect and burn the trash from the village and its beaches. In the future we would like to build a land field to bury plastics. We have asked local fishermen to produce weaved bamboo baskets to use as trash containers for the village.

Safe drinking water
There isn’t a bacteriologically clean water source in the island; all its wells are contaminated. We are planning to provide as many families as we can in the island with LifeStraw water filters, a simple and effective water purifier device. The family size device provides 18,000 liters of clean water. We need around $15,000 to purchase and ship 500 units, the minimum quantity allowed. Visit www.lifestraw.com |
Communications
Installation of satellite internet at the school to reach also the clinic. There are three private internet spots in the island, so we know it can be done. This project requires the purchase and installation of the equipment and the revamping of the current energy system. We would also have to pay for the monthly service |
Computers
We want to buy computers for the school and the clinic. Besides being a communication tool, the computers will help organize all the patients and students information. We have already financed a basic computer course for four staff members from the school and clinic.
Building of a delivery room adjacent to the clinic
Most women in the island give birth in their huts aided by a midwife. The level of hygiene of these deliveries is terrible. Very few women can afford the travel expenses and fees to go to the hospital at Le Cayes. |
Solar Cooking
We would also like to introduce solar cooking to the island. Right now everybody cooks using wood coal made from trees. Solar cooking would help to stop deforestation. We have tried a solar cooker in Miami and they work. But they are still quite expensive |
